Project Brief

This job began with the homeowners noticing water dripping down into their kitchen. Naturally, they called a plumber who removed the bathtub and then subsequently informed them to hire a contractor!

This was the condition of the room when I arrived. After removing the tile, it became evident that water had been leaching into the structure for some time as the rot was significant (walls and the floor). It was also clear that the window was the culprit.

It appeared, during a previous renovation, the window size was changed and instead of reframing the rough opening to properly support the new window, the framing around the window was incorrectly modified.

The rot in the framing members and subfloor was extensive and everything including the window needed to be replaced.

Project Commentary

The exterior wall was reframed to accommodate a new window and blocking was added to the joists to support the new subfloor planks and also to provide additional support under the bathtub. Plywood was installed over the subfloor for additional strength and to reduce deflection.

the cantilevered portion of the floor was reinsulated.

Schluter-Kerdi waterproofing was installed on the walls and ceiling in the tub alcove. Although not required, the membrane was continued to the ceiling to provide additional protection, given the low ceiling height, and to provide additional peace of mind to the homeowners.

New recessed lighting added much needed light to the room. White subway tile with high contrasting grout paired with 12"x24" matte Carrara-style porcelain tiles on the floor adds sophistication to the space without breaking the budget.

The walls were painted Benjamin Moore, Chantilly Lace (OC-65) in a matte finish for a high-end look. Matte black and natural wood elements in the new vanity, mirror, light fixture and custom fabricated shelving adds warmth and evokes a modern farmhouse vibe.

Custom fabricated towel hooks coordinate with the shelving and add texture and warmth in a simple and modern way.

An LED backlit shower niche creates visual interest and provides a source of ambient lighting when relaxing in the tub with the overhead lights turned off. The mosaic tile in the niche provides contrast and texture while in-keeping with the monochromatic colour scheme in the room.
