Project Brief

This project began as a DIY tile job. The client called me after he completed the installation of the waterproofing membrane and asked me to complete the project.

After checking the wall for flatness, numerous high and low points were identified, which is problematic for any tile installation. Given the client’s investment in the waterproofing membrane (very expensive stuff) redoing it was not an option.

The unevenness in the wall was leveled out to the greatest extent possible; however, still remained outside the parameters for large format tile.

2" x 8" subway tile in matte cool grey set in a stacked pattern evokes a cool modern vibe. The tile size was also chosen strategically to ensure lippage issues could be minimized.

The shower pan, drain flange and curb were installed and waterproofed.

Sills were cut and set for the top of the knee wall, ledge and curb.

White penny tile brings texture to the inside of the niches without competing with the Carrera marble cladding around the bathtub and on the floor. The niches are framed out in white stone which also repeats on the shower curb and knee wall.

2" x 2" honed charcoal grey mosaic tile adds depth and slip resistance to the shower stall floor.
