Project Brief

I was hired by the tenant of this rental property, with the permission of the landlord, to make some aesthetic improvements to this pink and blue gem of a bathroom.

As it was the tenant who was paying for the work, I needed to maximize the impact of a very limited budget. My clients gave me one mandate, which was to get rid of the pink and blue; and there was a lot of it!

Project Commentary

Paint was the solution that fit both the mandate and the budget.

The tiles were painted a neutral white, Chantilly Lace (OC-65) by Benjamin Moore, using high-quality two-part epoxy paint. Once cured this paint forms an extremely hard wearing surface that is impermeable to staining and that will never peel or chip.

The tile surface was thoroughly prepared by removing all grease and soap scum, and then primed with bonding primer.

The floor tile in the bathroom as well as in the shower was replaced with inexpensive 1" white hexagon mosaic tiles for a clean updated look.

Solidly constructed from old growth hardwood, the existing vanity was in ideal condition for refacing; and at a fraction of the cost of replacing the unit.

After making some modifications, the vanity was updated with brand new door and drawer fronts, soft-closing euro hinges, and a new drawer insert with soft-closing sliders.

A new white laminate countertop, new sink, matte black faucet, and matte black handles coordinate with the shower fixtures and other black accessories in the room for a monochromatic look.

A custom-fabricated floating mirror hides the existing built-in medicine cabinet. The original light fixture was also reused and brings a modern-retro vibe into the space.

The walls were painted with Benjamin Moore, Grey Owl (OC-52).
